Hermes provides
| Son of Zeus and Maia; invented the lyre for which his
brother Apollon rewarded him with the golden caduceus (a magic wand). With
this wand, he could make people fall asleep, send them dreams and guide
people who had died into the underworld. As the messenger of gods, he wears
winged sandals which he uses to fly freely between the mortal and immortal
world.
Further symbols are the winged cap and the moneybag, indicating him to be the god of lucky finds and quick profit. Therefore he was worshipped by thieves and salesmen. (source: "Who's who in der griechischen Mythologie" by Gerhard Fink. dtv sachbuch 1993) |
